Meldonium (Mildronate). A small-molecule compound (3-(2,2,2-trimethylhydrazinium)propionate) invented in the 1970s by Ivars Kalviņš at the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis in Riga. Structural analogue of gamma-butyrobetaine, a precursor in the carnitine biosynthesis pathway. Gained international recognition in 2016 when added to the WADA prohibited list following detection in samples from numerous professional athletes.
